Running In Your Dreams, Waking Up Tired

I wonder if the ugly duckling felt stupid when he realized being pretty didn't magically solve all his problems

I can't go a day without having certain songs stuck in my head.

You really have to listen to the lyrics in the songs in your head. Perhaps they're stuck in there for a reason. In those little metaphors and juxtapositions, there are messages that your subconscious is trying to tell you. It's the closest you'll ever have to a soundtrack to your life.

It's amazing to finally have best friends that I know are going to stick around. And that through everything I'm going through, and all the fake people we can come across day to day, I know I can trust them and they'll always be real.

Also, HOW AWESOME, are Mothers?! I know mine is!!
I'm very amused by my Mom's co-workers' jokes because they say she looks too young to have a 19-year old daughter, so when she tells them stories about me they'll say something like "Wow, and she's only six!"

The Problem Is Not Our Ruler. It's You. It's How You Won't Line Up.

Maybe we're not supposed to be happy.
Maybe gratitude has nothing to do with joy.
Maybe being grateful means recognizing what you have for what it is.
Appreciating small victories.
Admiring the struggle it takes simply to be human.
Maybe we're thankful for the familiar things we know.
And maybe we're thankful for the things we'll never know.
At the end of the day,
The fact that we have the courage to still be standing is reason enough to celebrate

One of the biggest struggles in life is to find oneself, but if you think about it, it should be even more important not to lose oneself. Maybe its in the searching and finding that we also find ourselves losing.

We're always coming across things and people and opportunities in life that take pieces of us. We lose a bit of ourselves every day.

Be A Light Unto Yourself

It's you when I look in the mirror and it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own.

When you are alone, you are not alone. There is a tremendous difference between loneliness and aloneness. When you are lonely you are missing the other. Loneliness is a negative state. You are feeling it would have been better if the other was there-- your friend, your wife, your mother, your beloved, your husband. It would have been good if the other was there, but the other is not.

Loneliness is absence of the other. Aloneness is the presence of oneself. Aloneness is very positive. It is a presence, overflowing presence. You are so full of presence that you can fill the whole universe with your presence and there is no need for anybody

Ultimately, each of us must develop within ourselves the capacity to make our way through the darkness without any companions, maps, or guides.

Coming Together and Coming Undone

Maybe its true that I can't live without you
Maybe two is better than one
There's so much time to figure out the rest of my life
but you've already got me coming undone

Love is all about falling. Falling in love and falling apart.
Which I believe happens simultaneously.

Feeling like a woman and a little girl at the same time.

I Hope Every Time You Fall In Love, It Is Nothing Like What You Expect, But Perfect Anyway

Lets get serious for a minute and pretend we all mean something to at least someone. Who do the hell do we think we are taking our loved ones lives into our own hands and heads and minds and lips and fingers?

Did you know that in some cultures, after a lover's quarrel, the man is expected to grovel and beg for forgiveness, prove himself to the woman and marry her all over again? I was very amused when I heard this and I can't stop thinking about it. Is this romantic? Or just stubborn and expensive? Think of how many weddings a couple would have!!!

I'm not sure how I feel about these power struggles in relationships. All the rules: Don't call. Don't show emotion. Always be the one to let go first.

Are you friggen kidding me?

Those are the rules on how to be a robot.

And the need to wear the pants in the relationship?
I say we all just refrain from wearing pants.

"Keep Your Crayons Sharp, Your Sticky Tape Untangled, and Always Put The Tops Back On Your Markers"

I saw Ernie Coombs' house the other day. I just happened to be in the neighbourhood, and I was informed that his was the last house on the right.

Now if you don't know who Ernie Coombs is, first of all, I shake my head at you. Not in shame, but in sympathy that you missed out on such a big part of life and Canadian culture.

Mr. Dressup. Yup! Mr. Dressup and his tickle truck hail alllllll the way from Pickering. I don't know what I was expecting but I was surprised when I saw that it was just a normal house. Just like any other house. I would never have guessed in a million years that a television celebrity that shaped my childhood lived there. What should I have hoped for? Flamingos on the lawn? A big treehouse with a talking crow named Chester to be chillin out in the front yard?

What I like about Mr. Dress Up is that he was American and later became a Canadian citizen. Right on, Ernie. You picked a good country to entertain for 30 years.

What many people probably don't know is the tragedy that struck his life, but he still carried on being Mr. Dressup and bringing joy to our lives despite the sadness in his.
He lost his wife in a terrible accident when a car crashed through a glass window and killed her. What a heartbreaking thing to happen to such a wonderful man. I'm feeling nostalgic and a little bit sad. I'm going to spend my afternoon youtubing videos from my childhood.

Lambchop? The Elephant Show? Sharon Lois and Bram? Eric Negler? Fred Penner?

Every Tuesday, People Fall In Love

If pictures are worth a thousand words, and memories are forever, then eternity might be bought for a roll of Kodak and a high school term paper.

The life of a musician:
They tour around the world, seeing many different places and faces... in return for sharing their stories and singing to us of their hearts and the ones they loved who broke them.

And how they still haven't gotten all of their shit back!

I suppose I have to acknowledge that it is April 20th today... The 20th day of the 4th month...
Be good. Or be bad, but be good at it.

Love is Forever, Or Not At All

After yesterday's post a reader informed me that Lucy from "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" passed away recently. What I said in yesterday's post is true. She'll live on forever in that song. Lyrics and literature and music will never end. Artists contribute to the world more than people realize. Sure, they're not doctors or lawyers, but they're indirectly changing lives and making us feel. And it's forever.

If I were to ask you "what is your favorite thing someone has ever said to you"-- what would you say? Maybe you've heard it many times before. You often hear the same lines, but maybe they mean more the 6th time- depending on who's saying it to you.

Tell me something I haven't heard before.

My answer:
"I feel like I know who you truly are through your words.
I'm going to sleep with roses in my hand tonight"

The Secret To Being Immortal

There should be public stations for relationship spats and awkward declarations of love

How to make the love of your life live forever: become an insanely talented musician and write a song about her. It's the secret to becoming immortal.

Imagine what it's like to be that girl in all those songs. Even if your real identity is a mystery to the listeners, you're going to live on forever in that song. Delilah in that Plain White Tee's song will forever be known for how much brighter she shines than Times Square. Roxanne will be known for wearing that red dress. Lucy's going to be in the sky with diamonds. Billie Jean will always be known for being the psycho ex girlfriend that pretended to be knocked up to win back Michael Jackson's love!

I can't stop listening to Soul Sister by Train. If someone were to write a song about me, I'd want it to be like this one:
ps, is it just me, or does that look like Howie Mandel on the ukulele?

In other news, Diana and I are officially accepted into Canada's National Ballet School.

Be dangerous.

"I Gave Up Wet Pillowcases and Black Licorice For Lent"

"opposites attract!" --what people say, to make themselves feel better about being with someone they have nothing in common with.

I figure if you were like, walking along, and it was raining, and the wind was blowing in your face, and you stepped in a puddle, and your girlfriend dumped you, and you just got in a fight and lost, you'd probably be having a pretty bad day.

But then, if like, the next day, you got up and it was sunny and bright and everything was looking up, but then you went outside and your legs got chopped off by a helicopter...

...That'd probably be a worse day

Train stations may very well be my new source of inspiration for writing, especially since I won't be seeing any airports in the near future. I've written some good stuff in airports just because of the environment and all of the strangers you meet and never know where they're going or where they came from.

Every time I leave the train station I think: "this won't be the last time ill make this painfully long trip at a random hour".
But it is always worth the trip once you arrive at your destination.

I feel the same way about waking up in the morning sometime. Its no secret that I have the worst bedtime habits and don't get enough sleep. Waking up and feeling very tired is one of the worst feelings to feel, and it won't be the last time I feel that. But when you finally do wake up and get on with your day, its worth it.

My friend Sean told me that the voice of Jiminey Cricket was from Edmonton, and recently died. Somewhere in the world there's a boy looking for a conscience on his journey to becoming a real boy. Disney made bildungsroman tales so magical.

I had an amazing weekend.

Ps, I finally watched New Moon. Bella needs some Ambien. (-R.C)

All I Ever Wanted Was A Brain Full Of Ideas-- Dangerous and Wrong

I'm hurting a little bit today and its not from the bruises from the random game of baseball I got involved in this weekend, or from the excessive eating from Easter.

I hope that wherever and whoever you are, you appreciate the small things in your life. Especially where you came from.

While you're at it, call your mother and thank her for everything... even if she was overprotective and made you sit in a car seat after all the rest of your friends outgrew theirs.

You Tell The Truth Only When You Least Expect To

I want to spend all day hiding in my bed if at all possible. Your idea of a holiday makes me drink gin in the morning.

This time last year I was in Paris with a bunch of friends, and we were told that the Eiffel Tower was under a terrorist attack.

Not a very funny April Fools joke.
